The Hunters: Kriegstagebuch das Unterseeboot U-35

Before dawn broke over Wilhelmshafen on September 30, Kapitän Leutnant Hagen took his VIIA to Sea, ordered to hunt for shipping in waters around the British Isles.
War had arrived. The assigned hunting grounds were remote and should allow time to drill the crew. Spotting only a lone freighter U-35 surfaced and the 88’s gun crew rushed to ready their gun. Hagen fired 2 torpedoes with no success. The 88 fired a few rounds as the SS Solo turned away. Both shells fell short. A shameful first mission.

November proved only modestly better. U-35’s first score. SS Berganger at 6800t.
As 1940 dawned, U-35 was back in British waters. An unlucky sortie. A RAF Hudson forced an emergency dive. A severe storm in the channel limited opportunities. Heading home, SS Santa Rita at 8400t filled the periscope, and was quickly dispatched.

In March, the crew began mumbling about being a jinxed boat. We spotted nothing. But were forced to dodge RAF Arvo aircraft twice.

Mai was U-35’s first taste of the Happy Times. Scoring four times. SS Tiberton 5200t; Tanker Capulet 8200t; SS Embassage 5000t; SS Empire Crossbill 5500t.

Summer was quiet, with only SS West Notus 5500t falling prey to U-35

As Autumn chilled, spirits buoyed. The Ship’s Dr was promoted. As was Hagen, now Korvetten Kapitän. But more joyous were the orders for hunting in the Atlantic!

Dodging escorts, 4 victories were scored. 2 tankers, a large freighter and a small one, totaling 31300t. Cassequel; Santore; AF Corwin; and Oilfield were stricken from the logs. But the jinx had not been idle. Returning home, a Tommie A/C dropped out of the sun, shattering the 88 and it’s crew and damaging the engines. A solemn crew slipped back into the pen.

Again, punished and sent back to hunt British waters. But glory awaited! U-35 caught HMS Avenger in open waters. Braving her escorts U-35 sunk the CVE.

Januar ‘41 brought orders for the Atlantic. But only the SS Gregalia 5900t was torpedoed.

So back the British waters again. RAF patrols are improving. As U-35 sorties it is Wasser bombed, causing minor hull damage and flooding. But there is no turning back. Two lone merchants are sent to the bottom. 10500t. SS Ballader and SS William Bryant.

Success brings orders for the Atlantic, but U-35 finds no victims to hunt.

The boat does a fast refit and in Juli heads back to the Atlantic. Verdammt! Again the RAF is waiting. Collaborators must be signaling them. A fuel tank is damaged beyond repair so an immediate return to port is needed. But the RAF catches on again and scores more hits.

While finishing the year in dockyards, Hagen is again promoted. Now a Fregatten Kapitän.

As 41 closes, U-35 is order into the Mediterranean. Hunting should be good. Shortly after clearing Fortress Gibraltar a Convoy is spotted. Jinx! The escort causes unrepairable damage to the fuel tanks and several crewmen die in the bombing. Again  the RAF catches U-35 close to base. Bombs cause more crew casualties and damages the hull.

March 42 is spent in the Atlantic. As SS Santore 7100t is sent to the bottom, it’s Escort depth bombs U-35, severely wounding the ship’s doctor and both torpedo rooms. The doctor passes before port is reached.

The bloodied crew is now viewed as Veterans by all in the Fleet. And Hagen is awarded the Knights Cross.

Finally in July ‘42 U-35 heads back into the Atlantic. A second Happy Time is this.
3 large freighters and a smaller are sunk totaling 19700t. SS Torny, Royston Gorge, Kennebac, and Treverbyn are stricken.

In late ‘42 U-35 heads back to the now familiar Atlantic Ocean. Again, the veteran crew scores well. 3 small freighters and a larger one. 16200t. SS Kinross, Aviemore, Merisaar, and R.E.Lee are stricken from the rolls.

As February ‘43 opens, U-35 heads back into the Atlantic. The crew is confident and joyous to be back at sea. As the boat clears the Bay of Biscay, the RAF pounces. Expert in the anti submarine role, the aircrew lands a 500lb’er directly in the conning tower of U-35. Rolling “box cars” sends U-35 and all its crew to a watery grave.

Amerika Bomber First Flight

April 1947. Hauptmann Steiner lifts off in his Me364 from, curtesy of Spain, the new Kampfgruppen 300 airbase in the Azores. His orders are to drop his bomb load on NYC and then continue inland and drop an Abwehr agent.

At the extreme range for Luftwaffe fighter cover the flight is attacked by 2 F8Fs flying off USS Yorktown. A Me262 chases one off, while the other F8F makes a steep diving pass doing no damage.

As Steiner spots the lights of NYC, the Belly Turret gunner shouts “2 P80s climbing from below”. The Ventral Turret explodes one before it can close, while the other makes a climbing run doing no damage.

As the run-in begins, the Amerika Bomber catches a hail of heavy flak. The American’s 120mm Stratosphere guns hammer the bomber. Seriously wounding the Tail Gunner and destroying the gun position. The Bomb bay doors take minor damage and the Airframe absorbs 2 hits.

Our Navigator and Bombardier are rattled enough that while the bombs are On Target, they barely scratch the Port Facilities.

The AAA gunners were surprised when the Bomber continued in-land rather than heading out to sea. However, the Stratosphere guns again pepper the bomber. The Navigator suffers a minor leg wound and the airframe is rattled again.

As the Abwehr Agent is about to jump, 2 P80s make attack runs. The Nose gunner explodes one, while the belly gunner prevents the other from making an effective pass. The Agent jumps and Hauptmann Steiner heads for the Azores.

Just as the Bomber crosses into the Atlantic, 2 F8Fs again barrel in. The Belly gunner again holds one at bay. The other is screaming in from 11 o’clock. The nose gunner runs out of ammo as the F8F closes in, tracers flashing past the cockpit. At that moment, the top Turret gunner stitches the F8F and it explodes.

The rest of the flight is uneventful. The Navigator will miss the next mission and the Tail Gunner will be in hospital for a month. However, our beloved Me364 “Brunhilde” will be patched and ready to go for our next mission.

Final thoughts about the game
Horrible rules. Rules don’t say how to use the damage charts from AAA. You kind of have to deduce how the three tables interact. No biggie for veteran gamers, just frustrating. Newbies would have many question. You have to go to BGG for Special Ops mission selection. It is mentioned in the rules, but not how to pick from the three.

The game plays fast and scratches an itch. So a no-regret purchase.

Tiger Leader - Poland 1939

Tiger Leader - Opening Invasion
Campaign: Poland 1939
Objective: For the Reich

Week 1: The invasion begins
Game 1

The opening battle sees a German mixed force colliding with the Polish 4th Armored Scout Force.
The Polish forces responded aggressively, counterattacking to eject the Germans from their first
captured village.

As the German Rifle Squad dug in to hold onto their gain, Sgt Schultz charged his armored car into
the fight. The 231AC destroyed the 2 Polish squads.

The Polish Armored forces surged forward, flanking the village. Sgt Dietrich drove his
PzII out from the safety of the woods challenging the Polish advance. Seeing this, Sgt Schultz
left the village in order to clear the Polish supporting infantry from the woods. Seeing this,
the last Polish tank began blasting away at the forces left in the village. Cpl Steiner, a veteran
of the Spanish War, led his anti-tank squad out of the village to finish off the Polish armor.

The open field assault left Cpl Steiner shaken and out of the next battle. Not surprisingly,
Cpl Saltz, who’s HMG team never fired a shot, worked his Political connections to gain
promotion for having fought courageously (?).

Here are the participating units and their “kills” during the battle.

Tiger Leader

Campaign: Poland 1939

Objective: For the Reich

Game 2

Week 1: A collision of Scouting Forces

The next battle sees a small German force aggressively assaulted by the Polish 12th Armored

Scout Group. The Polish forces advanced rapidly (+3 Tac Rolls). Fortunately for the German

units they had found good ground to accept the assault.

Sgt Fischer’s PzIII quickly dispatched a rifle team. The fast moving Polish Forces were unable

to register any hits. Fischer then went to work on his biggest threats, the Polish Tanks, as

Sgt Müller advanced his PzI against Polish Riflemen.

An exchange of attrition began. The PzIII took an engine hit, severely rattling Sgt Fischer.
At the same time, the Polish Tank, seeing his infantry support annihilated, fired and brewed
up the PzI. Fortunately Müller was dragged from the wreckage, stunned but surviving the
first day of the war! Cpl Stump led his team in taking out the Polish Armored Car in the
village, earning himself an increase in grade.

Fischer put two fast rounds into the last Polish tank, bringing the encounter to a close.

Here are the participating units and their “kills” during the battle.

Game 3 Week 1: The last encounter

The Germans committed their final forces. Sgt Schmidt in a Pz38T and Cpl Eschbach’s

mortar team.

Exhibiting the worst of luck, the small German force emerged in the mists of a very strong

Polish Command Recon Force. Outnumbered 10 units to 2.

The Pz38 was able to knock out the first Polish Tank encountered in the forest. Eschbach ineffectively

lobbed several mortar rounds at the nearby enemy.

The return fire was devastating. Enemy mortar rounds devastated the German mortar team in one

barrage. Schmidt advanced his tank out from under the hailstorm. Schmidt fought his lone tank

brilliantly, destroying an Armored Car, Mortar team and another Polish Tank before an enemy

mortar round pierced his tank’s upper deck, destroying it.

This would not be a glorious day....

Final Thoughts

As with all of DVG’s Leader games, Tiger Leader campaigns will be tough to win.

This was a solo effort by one of our gaming Posse but these games work really well

as cooperative efforts too. Tiger Leader could easily serve as a scenario generator

for miniatures games like Warlord’s Bolt Action or Two Hour Wargames NUTS! series.

Khe Sanh '68 Replay

I wanted to kick 2017 off with some gaming and was not able to meet the normal crew so I decided on Decision Games Khe Sanh '68 from their mini game series. If you'd like to read about the actual events Wikipedia has a good entry and you can click here to read it
Battle of Khe Sanh

The 11x 17 map and 40 counters were very quick to setup. I shuffled the Opposition Force deck which is used to determine the NVA and VC actions each turn. I looked over the operations available to the Allied forces and was ready to go.

Turn 1

Operation Prairie Fire - the buildup in Laos seemed ominous so an attempt was made to eliminate some of the gathering forces. The wiley foe avoided detection so the operation had no impact.

F4's and Skyraiders were called to pound the enemy outside of the Khe Sanh areas. They were very effective and eliminated two units and drove one off. For the moment Hill 861 was safe.

During the NVA turn the OpFor built up again and infiltrated closer to the US positions.

Turn 2

The Airforce and Navy worked hard and had all but one of the air strikes ready for action again. The rapid build up after the successful air actions caused the US to select to build up. All available reserves were moved and prepared for deployment. Air strikes once again hit the areas around Khe Sanh destroying one NVA and causing a guerrilla unit to break off. NVA AA managed to destroy one air strike and that was painful.

The NVA turn was ominously quiet.

Turn 3

Operation Niagra - the US decided the quiet NVA must me wavering and an intense air campaign would end the siege. The B52s and other strike planes did the butchers work eliminating four NVA units.

The NVA turn was very active as they advanced all across the area and launched several attacks. The Special Forces were able to destroy the Lang Vei camp and US armor roared in repelling the attacks on the Rock Quarry north of Khe Sanh.

Turn 4

Operation Igloo White - startled by the rapid build up on both sides of Khe Sanh it was determined intel was critical but the NVA skillfully avoided detection.

Several of the air strikes failed to refresh and the air attacks were ineffective.

Day Tranh!
NVA masterfully followed up on last turns advances with an attack on Khe Sanh from the north and the entrenchment to the
south. Puff The Magic Dragon appeared and destroyed one of the attackers. It was a brutal firefight going three rounds but in
the end the NVA swarmed Khe Sanh issuing the US a decisive defeat.

Closing Thoughts

WOW what a fun and fantastic system. The OpFor action deck makes this unpredictable and adds a high replay value.
In retrospect, the US was too conservative with the ground forces. The US should have actively tried to expand the perimeter around
Khe Sanh to avoid the attack from both sides. The US air power is critical and a turn of bad refresh rolls was costly. Instead of using intel
on turn four the US likely should have conducted an airmobile operation but the NVA card combo was powerful.

I look forward to playing this again and trying the other solitaire games in this series. At $12.95 retail, this game is a must have for
eveyone's collection.
